Procedure was done by administering barium sulphate suspension (95% w/v, 50ml) orally and fluoroscopic observation done. Filming done in Erect, AP and RAO, LAO positions and spot films of the upper and lower oesophagus taken.
FINDINGS:
The oesophagus was visualised while swallowing. No evidence of peristalsis noted.
Laryngopharynx and upper esophagus is well delineated with barium.
Irregularity of the mucosa noted in the thoracic part of oesophagus with mild narrowing of the distal third.
The gastro-esophageal junction is normal and barium is seen entering the stomach.
IMPRESSION:
OESOPHAGITIS WITH STRICTURE AT THE LOWER THIRD OF OESOPHAGUS
ABSENT PERISTALSIS IN THE OESOPHAGUS
- Because of the repeated vomiting by the patient, adequate barium could not be obtained in the GI system for the barium meal follow through.
Study can be considered once the oesophagitis subsides.
