Fracture of Talus
Most commonly talus fractures are avulsion fractures, occurying at sites of capsular/ligamentous attachment.
Hence, most common fracture of talus is an avulsion fracture at anterior surface of neck talus ( Attachment of capsule of ankle joint )
Next in frequency are osteochondral chip fractures of the talar \'dome\' along medial or lateral margins. (sites of attachment of body of talus with the two malleoli through ligaments).
Next in frequency are osteochondral chip fractures of the talar \'dome\' along medial or lateral margins. (sites of attachment of body of talus with the two malleoli through ligaments).
Usually they are a result of automobile accidents where the driver\'s foot was firmly applied to brake pedal at time of impact.
When such fractures are encountered, the most worrisome complication of this fracure should immediate strike the mind - Avascular Necrosis of the proximal fragment i.e the \'body\' of talus.
There one radiological sign which can help in predicting the probability of proceeding towards AVN - An early formation of a zone of linear lucency beneath the cortex of dome implies low probability of AVN.(Hawkin\'s sign).
