Trichobezoar
The stomach is filled with circumscribed hypodense structure.
Bezoars are the result of ingestion of indigestible organic matter such as
hair (Trichobezoars)
Vegetable and fruit matter (Phytobezoars),
a combination of both (Trichophytobezoars)The ingested hair always turn black irrespective of their original colour due to denaturation of proteins in highly acidic gastric juice (as can be seen on gastroscopy)
Patient profile:-Female with a peak incidence in second decade.
Presentation:- abdominal mass abdominal pain nausea and vomiting, weakness and weight loss, constipation or diarrhoea and haematemesis..
Complications of bezoar:- obstruction and ileus, ulceration, haemorrhage, perforation and peritonitis.
The Rapunzel syndrome:
Occurring in psychiatric patients and, trichophagia.
Its characteristics are: 1) the body of a trichobezoar located in the stomach, and its tail in the small bowel and/or in the right colon, 2) small or large bowel obstruction,
